Our On-Farm Readiness Review

Last week was HUGE for us!

We completed an On-Farm Readiness Review with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. While our farm is currently exempt from certain Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements due to our size, we believe strongly in building good food safety habits and systems as we grow.

Kim and Heather from the PA Department of Agriculture were incredibly helpful. They toured our indoor farm, answered a lot of our questions, and gave us valuable feedback on our food safety practices and documentation. It was a great experience and an important step in strengthening our operation for the future.

What does this mean for me?

At Back Mountain Microgreens, food safety and product quality are priorities for us year-round. Even though we are no longer pursuing third-party GAP certification, we continue to follow the Food Safety Plan policies and procedures we developed while we were. Why did we stop? We wanted to do business with distributors and grocery stores but found we're still too small to be attractive to larger organizations, we we decided to keep on with what we were doing, but save on the audit expense.  If we ever decide to turn back in that direction, it'll be a really seamless transition.  The reason we're sticking with the GAP policies and procedures is because we believe our customers deserve consistency and carefully grown products.
